The Senior school students were fortunate to have a very special guest at their Friday assembly; Miss Hawkins, our trusted senior Maths teacher’s step-father and former head-teacher himself, Mr John R Thomas visited the school. Mr Thomas who has recently retired was on a visit to Thailand to visit his Miss Hawkins. During this time he was offered the opportunity to give one last school assembly at the International School of Samui. With great enthusiasm, Mr Thomas accepted the offer and kindly prepared himself to speak in front of our enthusiastic cohort of senior students.
Mr Thomas gave an interesting and humorous speech, reminiscing about his childhood and years of teaching. He has worked in the field of education for the past 37 years, and a notable Headteacher for 20 of those. During his career he has taught English, Drama and History, positively influencing so many students and people across this time.
Mr Thomas began the assembly in good humour with jokes about the upcoming the house singing contest which will take place during Senior Speech Day between Oxford and Cambridge. He was fortunate to get a preview of them rehearsing.
He chatted to the students about his hometown, Leicester which led into a discussion about Leicester F.C. and his passion for the team. As we know Leicester F.C. is close to many people’s hearts in Thailand as it is owned by the late Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, the founder of the well-known King Power Corporation. The home-ground of Leicester F.C. is aptly known as the King Power Stadium.
Mr Thomas gave a powerful talk about acts of kindness and how defining this simple act can be. He encouraged students to think about moments of kindness they may have witnessed in the past week and how this made them feel.
The senior students got much insight from listening to Mr Thomas’s invaluable life experiences. We would like to thank him for his time, and inspiring motivational speech.
