Year 5 Experiment with Gravity and Air Resistance

The children were given a design brief and set to work on designing different types of parachutes in order to test which type would fall slowest, as part of their work on 'forces'.

Working in pairs, they made predictions, then carried out their tests before recording results, and found that the larger the surface area of the canopy, the slower it would fall. They also found the mass of the parachutist (in this case the clay) affected the rate at which the parachute fell.
