Living, working and studying on Koh Samui, we are fortunate to have access to various activities on the island as residents always endeavour to form groups and clubs of people sharing the same hobbies. For instance, we have football clubs for dads (and of course kids), tennis clubs for youngsters, and salsa groups for any age.
Basketball, however, is one of those activities that are just building up traction on the island. There is hardly a basketball competition between schools. That's why our senior students -- in pursuit of more experience in playing basketball -- have travelled to Phuket once again to join a basketball competition hosted by British International School Phuket (BISP).
Here's an account from Mr Cosslett, who accompanied 12 senior students along with Miss Hawkins:
Last Friday, 11th May 2018, ISS entered the 2nd annual BISP 3x3 basketball competition. 3x3 basketball is a fast rising variant of the sport that will be included in the 2020 Olympics. The competition saw us face teams from Thailand, Malaysia and even as far as Mongolia!
The standard of basketball at the competition was extremely high and our students can be proud of themselves for competing with some of the best teams in Asia. We have all returned to ISS with a determination to be better, faster and stronger for next years competition.
It was a great trip overall, they had their ups and downs beginning with some road issues when their journey came to a halt which led them to some exciting detours! Trips like this don't just teach students how to play ball.. Their experience also teaches them values and traits that they can apply when faced with unforeseen circumstances or challenges. This time, they learnt to make the most out of their trip, especially when the bus breaks down!
