Years 3 to 6 Learn About Food Waste

Today's assembly saw Years 3 to 6 exploring how not to waste food, learning that with every action and decision you make you are voting for the kind of world you want to live in.

1.3 billion tonnes of food are wasted every year, amounting to $1 trillion dollars worth of food. Roughly 1/3 of the food produced for human consumption is wasted. Large quantities of food are being thrown away because of its appearance. The students learnt that when food rots with other substances, it creates harmful gases, so it is not just the food that's being wasted, it's the fuel, water and other resources being used to transport it. But the worst part of it all is that there are people who are starving in the world. One quarter of all wasted food could feed ALL undernourished people in the world. Let's all be more mindful of our food consumption and waste!
